Revenue field note

More hotel distribution is not the same as better distribution.

A hotel distribution strategy should decide what each channel is for, what it costs, which demand it adds and how inventory, content and restrictions are controlled.

Connecting another channel is operationally easy compared with deciding whether the hotel should sell there. Distribution strategy begins after connectivity.

Give every channel a job

An OTA may provide international leisure demand and conversion trust. A bedbank may reach packaged or offline demand. GDS may support managed corporate and agency business. Direct provides control, guest ownership and merchandising flexibility. The mix depends on the hotel, but each connection should have a reason.

Evaluate channels on more than commission

Demand quality

Look at stay dates, lead time, length of stay, cancellation behaviour, market, room mix and periods of need. A channel that fills dates the hotel would otherwise sell itself may be less incremental than one that brings hard-to-reach demand.

Total cost

Commission is visible, but payment fees, connectivity, wholesaler margins, promotions, loyalty discounts, marketing contributions and operational servicing can change the real cost.

Control

Understand where rates can be redistributed, how promotions stack, how content is updated and what guest information reaches the hotel. Low cost with poor control can become expensive later.

Operational effort

Every new channel creates content, mapping, reconciliation, support and parity work. The long tail is only useful if someone can maintain it.

A simple channel review

For each major channel, write its intended demand role, total commercial cost, key markets, need periods, cancellation profile, control risks and the person accountable for performance. Then ask what would happen if the channel disappeared for ninety days.

If the answer is “we would lose demand we cannot currently replace,” the channel has a clear role. If the answer is “those guests would probably book elsewhere at similar cost,” the value deserves scrutiny.

Distribution is not a contest to be everywhere. It is a portfolio of demand sources with different costs and different jobs.

The goal is not channel independence. It is enough commercial understanding that the hotel chooses dependence deliberately.

Hotel metasearch is a price-and-landing-page test before it is a media test.

Before scaling hotel metasearch, make sure live prices are accurate, the direct offer is competitive, tracking works and the landing page can convert the demand you paid to recover.
