Strategy field note

The dashboard is not the decision.

Hospitality teams rarely suffer from a shortage of reports. The real problem is deciding what changed, who owns the response and what happens next.

Hospitality businesses rarely have no data. They have reports, dashboards, market updates, channel portals, guest feedback, forecasts and meetings. The harder problem is turning all of that into a decision while the information is still useful.

A dashboard can make the business look visible without making it easier to run. When nobody agrees what requires action, who owns the response or when the decision should be reviewed, reporting becomes a more attractive form of delay.

More reporting can create more distance

One team presents pace. Another explains campaign performance. Operations describes guest behaviour. Finance protects the final number. Each view may be correct, but the meeting still ends with several versions of the business and no shared next move.

The answer is not necessarily a larger dashboard. It is a smaller decision system around the information that already exists.

The decision chain

1. Signal

What changed? The signal should be specific enough to investigate. “Performance is soft” is not a signal. A change in pace, channel mix, search behaviour, cancellation pattern or conversion at a defined point in the journey is.

2. Threshold

When does the signal deserve action? Without a threshold, every movement becomes urgent or nothing does. The team needs to know what is normal variation, what requires watching and what requires a decision today.

3. Owner

Who is responsible for deciding, not merely reporting? Shared accountability often means no accountable person. Others can contribute, but one owner should leave the room with the next move.

4. Action

What will change, where and for how long? A useful action is concrete enough to execute and narrow enough to evaluate. “Improve direct business” is an ambition. Changing one offer, audience, message, restriction or follow-up sequence is an action.

5. Review

When will the team decide whether the action worked? Without a review point, temporary decisions become permanent habits and failed tests survive because nobody formally closed them.

A commercial meeting should end with fewer questions

A useful meeting does not need every chart. It needs the few signals that can change a decision. For each one: what moved, why the team believes it moved, what will be done, who owns it and when the result will be reviewed. The record of those decisions is more valuable than another exported dashboard.

Where software helps, and where it does not

Software should reduce repeated work: unify the signal, preserve the decision, route the owner, remind the review and show whether the action moved the intended outcome. It cannot decide what the business values or remove the need for commercial judgement.

The best system is not the one with the most visible data. It is the one that makes the next useful action harder to ignore.

A practical operating rhythm

Daily: exceptions that need action now. Weekly: decisions across revenue, distribution, marketing and operations. Monthly: what the team learned, which assumptions changed and which recurring work should be automated or removed.

A dashboard shows the business. A decision system moves it.

Strategy

A hotel pre-opening is won before the doors open.

Pre-opening commercial work should connect positioning, systems, rates, content, distribution and test bookings into one critical path long before opening day.

Strategy

Do not buy a hotel CRM because marketing wants to send better emails.

A hotel CRM decision should start with identity, consent, data quality, guest recognition and the operating use case. Email design comes much later.
